After pulling practically an all-nighter with Krista, Nash was barely functioning at work on Friday. She’d crawled into her own bed just before dawn after a sleepy good-bye to Krista and a plan to come see her dance at the club.
Nash mainlined coffee as she responded to email and sat through two news meetings. Thank goodness it was a slow news day, so after one bar chart and one locator map, Nash headed home. She ignored the unpacked boxes in her living room except for the one she propped her feet on as she deftly lifted noodles to her mouth with chopsticks. Nash held the theory that every relationship, regardless of how brief it might have been, taught her something. Her fleeting relationship with Lindsay had taught her how to use chopsticks.
She slurped an errant noodle and leaned back as she reflected on her night with Krista. Nash had enjoyed sex with Krista, but somehow their togetherness had only heightened her feelings of loneliness. What was happening to her? Maybe casual sex just wasn’t working for her anymore. But what did that mean? Nash didn’t want a serious relationship. Maybe there was some middle ground that she hadn’t discovered yet.
While Nash had been waiting on her order at the Chinese restaurant, she’d watched a lesbian couple in a booth nearby. They were laughing and talking, huddled together over a smartphone. And for a fleeting moment, she was jealous of their casual intimacy. She’d considered that monogamy might offer some level of emotional comfort she’d previously dismissed for fear that she’d feel trapped by it.
She set the box of noodles aside and reached for her beer. Nash reclined with an arm behind her head and tried to sort through her feelings. After sleeping with Krista, Nash had fallen into bed thinking she’d immediately doze off. But instead she lay awake for some time thinking of Anna. Thoughts of Anna had turned into dreaming of Anna. Why had Anna so completely taken up residence in her head?
Nash reached for the white takeout box, finished off the noodles, and turned in early, no closer to figuring out her odd mood swings than she had been before the move.
Saturday, Nash slept in. Then, after downing half a pot of strong coffee, she spent the better part of the day setting up her studio space. She wouldn’t really be able to relax and feel at home until she had her easel and paints in working order.
There were three canvases she’d been working on. One was nearly finished. She placed that one on the easel and sat for almost an hour studying its color and texture. Unsure of what to do next, she mixed some colors on a palette and tested them on a discarded canvas. Nothing felt right.
Inspiration was apparently going to elude her for now.
She decided to take a nap and then later ate leftovers for dinner. By nine thirty, she felt almost back to normal and decided to go out to the local lesbian bar.
